Why Being Bored Might Actually Be the Best Thing for Your Brain By CMG Student Ambassador Aiden Ellison For many teens, the idea of boredom became outdated a long time ago. If someone feels bored, they will immediately look for an entertainment option. Social media, videos, games, or anything else that can provide a distraction will quickly replace that feeling. There will always be a notification or a video ready to capture their attention. Technology has made it easy to stay entertained, but the ability to sit and do nothing has also been lost. Waiting even a few minutes can seem difficult when someone is used to getting entertainment instantly. Being constantly entertained has become the norm for many young people. However, boredom is not necessarily negative. Having nothing demanding our attention can give the mind some time to rest. While focusing on a screen or another activity, we may not have time to think about our interests, goals, and dreams. Some ideas emerge during the moments when we have nothing to do. The mind can become tired from constant distractions and notifications and begin searching for something else to focus on. This may result in daydreaming, problem-solving, or even developing a new interest. Being bored does not mean sitting and doing absolutely nothing forever. It simply means learning to enjoy moments when there are no constant distractions. The next time someone finds themselves sitting idle, they should try to resist the temptation to immediately pick up their phone. They might start thinking about something they have always wanted to do. It could be drawing, writing, building something with their hands, going outside, or learning about an interesting topic. Many hobbies and ideas begin simply because somebody was looking for something to do. Boredom can also help us get to know ourselves better. In the absence of notifications and other distractions, there is more time to understand what we enjoy and what we value. Teens do not have to be occupied 24/7. Constant attempts to entertain ourselves and stay busy can sometimes become obstacles to discovering new things. The next time boredom comes, do not fight it immediately. Let your mind rest for a while and see where your thoughts take you. You might realize that boredom is not empty time after Cascade Media Group represents the future—powered by digital innovation.
