Las Posadas

Las Posadas

Las Posadas is an extended devotional prayer celebrated every year between Dec. 16 and Dec. 24 throughout Latin America, including in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Cuba, and by Latinos and Hispanics in the US. Las Posadas has been celebrated in Mexico for over 400 years and depicts Mary and Joseph’s search for a place for Mary to give birth to Jesus in. Two people dress up as Mary and Joseph and a procession of musicians and community member’s goes from location to location, singing songs (“posadas” specifically asking for a place to stay) and praying. The night often ends with the singing of Christmas carols, star-shaped piñatas for the children, and a meal together.
